See How Astravya Calculates

Transparent Calculations. Clear Assumptions. Traceable Interpretations.

Calculation identity

Every chart records the engine version, ayanamsha, coordinates, time zone and generation time so a result can be traced and reproduced.

Methods

Birth inputs

What it calculates
Date, time and place of birth.
Inputs
Entered by you; validated for impossible dates and coordinates.
Method
Stored with the profile and shown on every chart.
Limitations
Results are only as accurate as the birth time you provide.

Coordinates

What it calculates
Latitude and longitude of the birthplace.
Inputs
Birthplace search or manual entry.
Method
Looked up from the place name and saved with the profile.
Limitations
Small towns may resolve to a nearby location — check the shown coordinates.

Time zone & daylight saving

What it calculates
The UTC offset in force at the moment of birth.
Inputs
Birthplace and date.
Method
Uses the place's historical time-zone rules, including daylight saving, to convert local time to UTC.
Limitations
Historical records for some regions and years are incomplete; a warning is shown when the time is ambiguous.

Ayanamsha

What it calculates
The offset between tropical and sidereal zodiacs.
Method
True Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsha, computed for the birth moment.

Planetary positions

What it calculates
Sidereal longitude, sign, retrograde and combustion state of the nine grahas.
Method
astronomy-engine 2.1.19 (NOVAS / VSOP87D + ELP2000-82B), converted to sidereal with Lahiri.
Limitations
Rahu/Ketu use the lunar node model implemented in the engine.

Ascendant

What it calculates
The rising sign and degree.
Inputs
UTC birth instant and coordinates.
Method
Computed from local sidereal time and latitude.

Houses

What it calculates
The twelve bhavas.
Method
Whole-sign houses from the ascendant sign (Rashi / D1).
Limitations
Other house systems are not currently offered.

Nakshatra & pada

What it calculates
Lunar mansion and quarter of each planet.
Method
Sidereal longitude divided into 27 nakshatras of 13°20′, each in four padas.

Vimshottari dasha

What it calculates
Mahadasha, antardasha and sub-periods.
Method
120-year Vimshottari cycle from the Moon's nakshatra position at birth.

Divisional charts

What it calculates
D1–D60 vargas.
Method
Traditional Parashari varga division rules applied to sidereal longitudes.

Transits

What it calculates
Current planetary positions against the birth chart.
Method
Same engine and ayanamsha, computed for the selected date and time.

Panchang (tithi, yoga, karana)

What it calculates
Daily Vedic calendar elements.
Method
Derived from the sidereal Sun–Moon relationship.

Sunrise / sunset

What it calculates
Local rise and set times.
Method
Computed by the ephemeris for the chosen location.
