What is Kundli Milan?
Kundli Milan compares two birth charts before marriage. The most common method in North India is Ashtakoota, based on each person's natal Moon Nakshatra and sign.
The eight kootas at a glance
Varna (1), Vashya (2), Tara (3), Yoni (4), Graha Maitri (5), Gana (6), Bhakoot (7) and Nadi (8) — 36 points in all. Traditionally, more than 18 is generally considered acceptable.
1. Varna (1 point)
Moon signs fall into four varnas — Brahmin (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces), Kshatriya (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius), Vaishya (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) and Shudra (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius). It is read as a match of temperament and work outlook, not birth or caste. 1 point if the groom's varna is equal or higher, else 0.
2. Vashya (2 points)
Signs fall into five groups — quadruped, human, water, wild and insect. It reflects mutual attraction and influence. Same group 2, compatible 1 or half, hostile 0.
3. Tara (3 points)
Count from the bride's Nakshatra to the groom's and back, dividing by 9. Remainders 3, 5 and 7 are inauspicious. Both directions good: 3; one: 1.5; neither: 0.
4. Yoni (4 points)
Each Nakshatra has one of 14 animal yonis. Same yoni 4, friendly 3, neutral 2, enemy 1, sworn enemy (e.g. cow–tiger, cat–rat) 0.
5. Graha Maitri (5 points)
Compares the friendship of the two Moon-sign lords — a sign of mental harmony. Same lord or mutual friends 5, down to 0 for mutual enemies.
6. Gana (6 points)
Nakshatras are Deva, Manushya or Rakshasa. Same gana 6, Deva–Manushya 5 or 6, combinations with Rakshasa usually 0 or 1.
7. Bhakoot (7 points)
Looks at the distance between the two Moon signs. 1/7, 3/11 and 4/10 give 7 points; 2/12, 5/9 and 6/8 give 0 — this is Bhakoot dosha.
8. Nadi (8 points)
Each Nakshatra is Adi, Madhya or Antya Nadi. Different Nadi gives 8; the same Nadi gives 0 — Nadi dosha. As the highest-scoring koota, it is treated as the most important.
Nadi dosha
Formed when both share the same Nadi. Tradition links it to health and children, but it is not a medical finding — consult a doctor for health concerns.
Traditional exceptions include the same sign with different Nakshatras, the same Nakshatra with different signs, or the same Nakshatra with different padas. Traditions apply these differently.
Bhakoot dosha
Formed when the Moon signs are 2/12, 5/9 or 6/8 from each other. Tradition links 2/12 to finances, 5/9 to children and 6/8 to health and discord.
It is traditionally cancelled when both signs share a lord (e.g. Aries–Scorpio, Taurus–Libra) or the lords are mutual friends.
Beyond the score
Guna Milan looks only at the Moon. The 7th house, Venus, Manglik status and Dashas are also considered. No score guarantees a relationship's success, and a low score alone doesn't prove failure.
