Jaimini · जैमिनि

A sign-based system with degree-ranked karakas and Chara dashas.

Jaimini reads the chart mostly through signs rather than planets in houses. Significators are assigned by planetary degree, aspects fall between signs rather than planets, and timing runs on sign-based Chara dashas. It is used alongside Parashari, not instead of it.

How it works in practice

  • Rank the seven planets by degree to assign Chara karakas from Atmakaraka downwards.
  • Read Arudha padas for how a matter appears to the world, as distinct from what it is.
  • Use sign aspects (rashi drishti) instead of planetary aspects.
  • Time with Chara dasha and its sub-periods, keyed to signs rather than planets.

Strengths

  • Fast, decisive readings for life direction, status and karmic themes.
  • Arudha padas explain the gap between reality and reputation.

Cautions

  • Karaka schemes and dasha variants differ between lineages; state which one is used.
  • Degree-ranked karakas shift with small birth-time errors.

How it differs from other schools

vs Parashari

Karakas are fixed by degree rather than by nature, and aspects are between signs rather than planets.

Read Parashari

vs Nadi

Jaimini is rule-based and reproducible; Nadi readings rest on lineage-specific manuscripts.

Atmakaraka: planet with the highest degree

In the Jaimini method, the planet with the highest degree within its sign becomes the atmakaraka, the significator of the self and its central aim.

When it applies: Jaimini method only; Rahu handling differs between commentators.
